Island hopping is one of the easiest ways to see a different side of Zanzibar. Around Stone Town, short boat trips can combine Prison Island, nearby sandbanks and clear blue water into a relaxed day on the Indian Ocean. The best trips are simple, well timed and not overloaded.

Start with the right timing

Ask about tide times and sea conditions before booking. Sandbanks look very different depending on the tide, and boat comfort can change with wind. A good operator will explain realistic timing instead of promising the same experience at every hour.

Visit Prison Island respectfully

Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is often included in short boat itineraries. Visitors usually come for history, sea views and the famous giant tortoises. Follow local guidance, keep a respectful distance from animals and avoid treating wildlife as a photo prop.
