Jozani Forest is one of Zanzibar's most memorable inland experiences. The forest is best known for the Zanzibar red colobus, a rare primate associated with Unguja Island, but the visit is also about shade, quiet trails and the contrast between forest and coast.

Go with a guide

A guided visit helps you understand the forest without treating it like a simple photo stop. Guides can explain the behavior of the monkeys, the importance of the habitat and the rules that protect the area. Listen carefully before walking the trail.

Keep distance from wildlife

Red colobus monkeys can appear relaxed around people, but they are still wild animals. Do not feed, touch or crowd them. Keep voices low, avoid sudden movement and give the guide room to manage the group.

Walk the mangrove boardwalk

Many visits include a mangrove area, where roots, tidal water and filtered light create a very different landscape. The boardwalk is a useful reminder that Zanzibar's ecosystems are connected: forest, reef, beach and village life all depend on healthy natural systems.

Choose your timing

Morning visits are often more comfortable because temperatures are lower. Bring water, light clothing, closed shoes or secure sandals, and insect protection if you are sensitive to bites.

Make it part of a south-east itinerary

Jozani works well as a half-day trip from Jambiani. You can pair it with beach time, a village lunch or a quiet afternoon back at the hotel.
